Orpheum, Los Angeles, CA. While fans loved
them, critics voiced other opinions. Land, in Metronome, Jun/44
states, "Then the spots before my eyes. It's the same old act for the
Spots, and its quality is the nadir of everything. Billy Kenny's phony
falsetto and grotesque use of hands, the Jim Crow "roll yo eyes, bo" of
two of the Spots, and the smug, overconfident sureness of all four totaled
up to a nauseating sum. Yes, the crowd enjoyed their songs. But the crowd
enjoyed Williams' band and Miss Fitzgerald's songs, too. The Spots, all
four, had better work fast and grab all the moo they can. It's a natural
fact that they can't go on fooling the public forever!-songs: |
W/Ella Fitzgerald, Cootie Williams & His
Orch., Moke & Poke, Eddie Vinson, Ralph Brown. Movie: My Darling Clementine.
[Los Angeles Times, 29Apr/44] One reviewer charged the IS used
an Uncle Tom routine which Negroes regarded as degrading and this charge
followed Deek Watson for the remainder of his career. [Goldberg] Broke
every Orpheum record with $43,007. Nine extra shows added during week
when 2,000 people in line after final scheduled show on Tuesday and 6th
show had to be added. [Billboard, 13May/44] Terrific $42,000 or
over. [Variety, 3May/44] |

2 shows at each location. Original times were set as 6:55PM at Casino,

Travel time was claimed to be about 35 minutes in a fast moving vehicle.
[Afro-American , 27Sep/47] Six thousand fans were reported to be
disappointed Tuesday which indicates the Ink Spots probably performed
Monday night and found the doubling too much. They apparently sorted out
